What are some completely natural and safe remedies for constipation?
I am frequently constipated even though I eat plenty of fiber, stay hydrated and exercise. My stools are normal size and aren’t too hard; I just have a hard time pushing them out. I often feel like I have a full colon and rectum (sorry for the details). I used ex lax a few times with success, but I don’t want to become dependent on it. I can’t stand prunes by the way. What are some safe remedies for constipation?

best thing ive tried was a stool softener. it wont blow your butt out like ex lax but it will soften up your poo and come out easier.

Try apple juice. This is a natural laxative, and should work well.

some people have to take ex lax daily cause they always have this problem.

Okay, ex-lax is a stimulant laxative. Stimulant laxatives lead to laxative dependency. Since you are have difficulty passing the stools although they are not “too hard” it leads me to believe you have developed a bit of dependency. At this point, I would suggest trying Activia (or something similar) for several weeks to see if that helps restore colon health.

Constipation is not a disease; however, it is a symptom of other things such as lifestyle and sometimes diseases of the colon. If this continues you may want to discuss it with a Gastroenterologist.

I agree with Pog. If this is frequent it could be a symptom of something else. How long have you been suffering from frequent constipation for? If it has been going on for a while or if it continues please see your doctor about it.

If your stool is normal size and not of a hard consistency and you’re on a fiber and water diet you may have outlet obstruction constipation. Basicly, what happens is that you have normal transit time thru the colon but when the stool gets to the rectum, the muscles are are either weak or not working together properly to “push the poo”. Consequently, you still feel you have to go… “incomplete evacuation” To verify you’d have to have a transit study and anomanometry testing. It is treated using biofeedback and e-stim. Only a thought but something you could chat with doc about. Hope this helps and good luck!
